Dr Clifford Manshardt initiated the proposal to set up a school for professional Social Work and thus approachd the Dorabji Tata Trust which later accepted the proposal and approved the idea. In 1936 , the Dorabji Tata School of Social Work was set up at Nagpada Neighbourhood House with Dr Clifford Manshardt as its first Director.
The Nagpada Neighbourhood House at Byculla where TISS started its journey as the Dorabji Tata School of Social Work in 1936.
The journey continued here from 1936 to 1948 and then in 1949 the institute shifted to a spacious bungalow at Andheri. Today the Neighbourhood house still stands at the same place but has now changed to Nagpada Police Station.

The first Convocation was held in 1938 with the first batch of 20 students handed over the DipSA certificates, Diploma in Social Work .
It was a much attended occassion with several of the city newspapers giving it adequate coverage .
Formal approval from UGC for TISS as a deemed university
The Institute is recognised as a Deemed University, primarily funded by the University Grants Commission (UGC). This new status facilitates infrastructure expansion necessary for promoting inter-disciplinary and applied research.

The first research unit of the Institute, the Unit for Child and Youth Research, is set up with support from the UNICEF. Subsequently, several other research units are set up in relevant areas, between 1970 and 1984.
Prof. Armaity Desai takes over as Director at TISS
Prof. Armaity Desai takes over as Director and moves TISS towards a paradigm shift in social work education from an urban, institution based, remedial model to more rural-oriented community and rights based approach.
Approval paper for Tulajapur Campus land
As part of the Golden Jubilee initiatives towards holistic and sustainable development, the idea of a Rural Campus is conceived. The Government of Maharashtra (GoM) donates 100 acres of barren land in Sindphal village (Tuljapur Taluka, Osmanabad District), for this purpose. Today the School of Rural Development, Tuljapur offers a five year integrated programme in Social Work, with specialisation in Rural Development.
Livelihood Project at the Andaman islands
TISS continues its intervention in natural and human disasters by providing relief and support. After the deadly tsunami in December 2004, TISS teams reached Andamans and carried out extensive work to aid the Government agenices and also helpd set up independent livelihood centres .
Platinum Jubilee Celebration of Tata Institute of Social Sciences
As the Institute enters its Platinum Jubilee year in June 2011, it seeks to use this opportunity to achieve a several objectives:
- Reach out and network with alumni at the Alumni Meet on December 17 and 18.
- Initiate new programmes and structures such as the M-Ward Transformation Project that would help it better serve its vision and mission.
- Reflect on its contribution to human service and social sciences professional education, research, field action and extension
- Celebrate 75 years of service to society through organising relevant events and workshops.
